Job Description

Job Summary:Administers radiation treatments accurately and efficiently per the physicians orders and according to simulation instructions. Treats patients in a caring and professional manner, which instills a positive image of St. Clares and confidence in the care provided.Essential Duties:
  • Greets patients, verifies patient identification, reviews chart for proper radiation treatment parameters and physician prescriptions. Informs patients and families about treatment process; answers questions regarding process, effects of radiation, equipment used and so forth.
  • Prepares patient for treatment by assisting in dressing properly, direct or transport patient to treatment room. Positions equipment in accordance with treatment plan, including placing blocking trays and other radiation beam altering devices. Takes Portal Films (e.g., radiograph that is compared with those taken during simulation process) when appropriate to ensure treatment protocols are accurately set up and followed. Administers treatment to patient.
  • Calculates proper dosage of ionizing radiation for patient, as prescribed by physician. Programs equipment to deliver prescribed dose. Works with dosimetrist and/or physicist to implement computer dosimetry into treatment plan.
  • Monitors patient throughout treatment process by checking video monitors and intercom. Informs physician any time patient experiences distress or side effects related to treatment process.
  • Records each patients treatment by noting amount of ionizing radiation delivered, location of treatment site, types of blocks used, and so forth on patient chart. Checks to ensure chart is complete, including history and physical, physician consult reports, diagnostic reports (e.g., radiology), and so forth.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate journals, books and other literature and attending related seminars, conferences and the like.
  • Records Verbal Orders received from the Radiation Oncologist regarding dose and block changes. Records signature, date and time. Makes calculation adjustments and carries out on the specific treatment date. Obtains physician signature before the second treatment is provided.
  • Maintains daily log and statistics regarding: number of patients treated, number of treatments administered, number of simulations, number of new patients.

Job Requirements

Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of approved program in Radiation Therapy Technology required
Experience:
  • Up to three months experience necessary to understand how to operate equipment, be able to answer patients and families questions, know policies and procedures of the department.

License/Certification:
  • Licensed by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy Technology and Radiologic Technology.
  • BLS certificate required.
