Transportation Planner at Paramus

Job Description

Position Summary

The Transportation Planner is responsible to establish and maintain transportation services and expertise to all functional areas of the company. He/she must have a strong emphasis on customer service and a continuous improvement track record with a “can do" attitude. The Transportation Planner will be in a situation to make significant cost savings and service improvements in this highly visible position.

Reports to:  Senior Director of Transportation and Logistics

 

Location:  Paramus, NJ


Essential Functions and Skills
  • Maintains an effective carrier base that provides competitive pricing, efficient service and sufficient equipment availability.
  • Negotiate best pricing agreements and contracts with carriers and related services.
  • Proves & confirms adequate cargo and liability insurance on every carrier in the BDBD network.
  • Strongly supports the customer service initiative.
  • Carries responsibility for routing shipments, truckload building and identifying direct ship opportunities.
  • Takes accountability for resolution on freight invoices that do not match the TMS rate data base.
  • Manages unloading fees, detention, redelivery costs, layover fees, “dead head" cost approval, etc.
  • Provides support for Distribution network evaluations.
  • Maintains an electronic carrier rate data base to serve BDBD as a transportation management system and the freight invoice match pay system.
  • Manages the over, short and damage (OS&D) occurrences and assists in securing documentation for the filing and recovery on freight claims.
  • Meets or beats a 96% on time delivery service level.
  • Authenticates all shipping documentation for, as an example proper temperature requirements on bills of lading and “do not freeze" in the freeze zones.
  • Duties may also include pallet control and other responsibilities, as assigned.
  • Exposure to International Ocean & Air Shipping; assist Export CSR when required.
  • Small Package (Fedex)  oversight

Job Requirements

Successful candidate will possess the following:
  • A strong working knowledge of the transportation industry with emphasis on refrigerated, frozen and ambient food products.
  • Be familiar with working with CPG 3PL distribution network consolidation models.
  • A proven track record of generating spot and sustained cost improvements.
  • Sound capacity for multi tasking and functioning as a strong team player.
  • A “hands on" individual, with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to interface with all levels and departments within an organization.

 

Education
  • Bachelors degree
  • Logistic/transportation trade association membership a plus.

Experience
  • A minimum of 3 years transportation experience in the food industry.
  • Proficient in MS excel computer skills with spread sheet quantitative calculation experience.
  • Above average analytical skills required.
